The Stanford Wine Route

The Stanford Wine Route: A Hidden Gem in the Overberg. Nestled in the heart of the Overberg, just 90 minutes from Cape Town, the Stanford Wine Route is an intimate yet captivating experience for wine lovers. Though small in scale, this recently launched route is brimming with charm, boasting eight exceptional wineries set against the backdrop of the picturesque Stanford countryside. The town itself, with its historic charm and stunning landscapes, is already a favourite among Capetonians seeking a weekend escape – now, its wine route adds yet another reason to visit.

Unlike the sprawling estates of Stellenbosch or Franschhoek, the Stanford Wine Route offers a more personal, boutique experience. Each winery along the route brings something unique to the table, from award-winning Shiraz to crisp Chenin Blanc, creating a journey of discovery for both seasoned connoisseurs and casual wine enthusiasts alike.

Eight pioneering wineries.

The Stanford Wine Route is made up of eight distinct wineries, each with its own character and specialties, and all well worth a visit.

  • Raka Wines – Situated along the R326 in the scenic Klein River Mountain valley, Raka is known for its robust red wines and consistently high-quality vintages.
  • Boschrivier Wines – A boutique winery focusing on small-batch Shiraz, Boschrivier prides itself on crafting expressive wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.
  • Vaalvlei Winery – A hidden gem on the road to Elim, Vaalvlei is the smallest estate on the route, with only three hectares under vine. The rest of the farm is dedicated to conservation, making it a haven for nature lovers. The estate also offers Vineyard Cottage, a charming retreat for guests looking to extend their stay.
  • Springfontein Estate – Set along the Klein River en route to Die Plaat, this estate specializes in Chenin Blanc and Pinotage, producing elegant wines that capture the essence of the region.
  • Misty Mountains Estate – More than just a winery, Misty Mountains also produces bottled water and olives, offering visitors a well-rounded tasting experience.
  • Sir Robert Stanford Estate – Located just outside of town, this historic estate is home to the popular Zesty Lemon Restaurant, where guests can pair their wines with delicious, locally inspired cuisine.
  • Stanford Hills Estate – A favorite among visitors, this estate is known for its laid-back atmosphere and delightful restaurant, The Tasting Room, where guests can enjoy farm-to-table dishes alongside their wines.
  • Walker Bay Vineyards & Birkenhead Brewery – The final stop on the route, this estate offers both wine and craft beer, making it the perfect place for a diverse tasting experience.

Navigating the Stanford Wine Route is a breeze, with multiple entry points depending on your starting location. If you’re coming from Cape Town, the most direct route is via the R43 through Hermanus or Gansbaai. Alternatively, you can access it via the R326 from the N2, roughly two-thirds of the way between Caledon and Riviersonderend. For those staying in Greyton, the wine route makes for an excellent day-trip adventure.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just a leisurely day trip, the Stanford Wine Route promises an unforgettable journey through a region that’s as rich in history as it is in wine. With breathtaking landscapes, warm hospitality, and an emphasis on quality over quantity, this lesser-known wine region is poised to become a favorite for those in search of something special.
